The New Phenomenon of Steel Buildings Crushing Themselves
The seven World Trade Center buildings were in the two blue regions of the map here above. On September 11th 2001, all 7 buildings were destroyed. 110-story WTC 1 and 2, and 47-story WTC 7 were leveled, and WTC 3, 4, 5, and 6 were severely damaged, with large portions of WTC 3, 4, and 6 being crushed.
It is interesting that, in spite of the thorough devastation of all the buildings with World Trade Center addresses, no large buildings outside the blue zones were sufficiently damaged to warrant their demolition in the months that followed the attack. 1 The "collapse" of Building 7 was remarkably tidy. Although it was wedged between the Verizon building and the U.S. Post Office building, it barely damaged either of them.
It is even more interesting that, prior to September 11th, no steel framed building had ever undergone total collapse due to any cause or combination of causes other than controlled demolition and severe earthquakes. Such buildings have survived hurricanes, severe fires, earthquakes, and bombings, but none have fallen down of their own weight -- an event that was portrayed as inevitable on September 11th.
Of the collapses of the three huge buildings on September 11th, the collapse of Building 7 is treated separately. If you believe the official story, then Building 7 would be the only example in history of a steel framed building undergoing complete collapse as a result of fires. It and the Twin Towers would be the only permanent vertical steel structures to have fallen into themselves instead of falling over, except in cases of demolition.
The collapses of the Twin Towers are analyzed in much more detail than Building 7 because there is more evidence, and because, whereas Building 7's fall looked like a standard building demolition, the disintegrations of the Twin Towers had many features that are not easily explained.

We all know much about the past. But what we need right now in America is to grow up above the past. The only easy way to address the past is to vote Obama. I can not get any trace of racism or anti-Semitism in the works and words of Barack Obama and I also read the books of Barack, know about his legislature record, because I became very interested in this political phenomenon after hearing and rereading his speech on the Democratic Convention of 2004. I saw immediately his capacity to overcome the political crisis which George W. Bush should bring in the world, because I opposed the war in Iraq too from before the beginning on the same arguments and values. As a Dutchman I want to see Americans as liberators and trusted allies, but I was disappointed when our government gave political support to the war, while they knew Colin Powell was lying on the issues of WMD's, the connection Saddam/Al-Qaeda and the thread to Saudi-Arabia (an army along the border but Photoshopped on a Google-map). Sure I'm glad Saddam is finished, because he was a thread against Kurds and Israel and he supported Palestinian terrorists. So, let's kill him and some more of his kind and get out of the place. The same is to do with Al-Qaeda, the leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood, Hezbollah and Hamas. Democracy is a self-help organisation. You can not order it, nor buy it, nor sell or export it. I am not a softy and Obama is not either. We don't speak or shake hands with terrorists. But the President of a nation has to speak with hostile presidents of hostile nations. That's an obligation of power. Don't be shy.

The Triangular Viewpoint On The War In Iraq

March 21 2008 will be seen in history as the day of the truth about the surge in Iraq. The Washington Post reported:

“Graham and others opened the door for Petraeus and Crocker to match White House rhetoric on the ongoing threat from al-Qaeda in Iraq and the rising menace of Iran. But while Petraeus noted that the recent Iraqi government offensive in Basra against the Iranian-backed Shiite militia of cleric Moqtada al-Sadr illustrated Tehran's malign influence, Crocker repeated something he said in September: Persian Iran is up to no good in Iraq, but its role there is limited by deep Arab Iraqi antipathy.
Both Petraeus and Crocker described the Basra operation as a positive demonstration of Iraqi sovereignty and military determination, though one with operational flaws.
Petraeus confirmed that Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki had rejected his advice to delay the offensive until Iraqi troops were better prepared.
"There is no question that it could have been better planned," Petraeus said. He agreed that the 1,000 Iraqi army troops and police who either deserted or refused to fight were "a disappointment." But, he added, thousands of others had fought well, particularly in other areas of southern Iraq where simultaneous violence also broke out.”

Attend that where Nouri al-Maliki called the militia of Moqtada al-Sadr “Iranian backed groups of criminal bandits,” but he could not defeat them in Basra with 50,000troops of his official Iraqi army. Petraeus and Crocker witnessed that Maliki’s Shiite-dominated Government is reluctant to put the 90,000 Sunni security volunteers on its payroll. These fighters, former insurgents and now called the Awakening Movement, diminished the influence and numbers of al-Qaeda, knowing where to find end how to fight them, and the United States are still funding them, because they are the cornerstone of the surge.
Senator Barbara Boxer said: “I’m just asking you [Petraeus] why you would object to asking [Iraq] to pay for that entire program, given all we are giving them in blood and everything else.”
Petraeus responded: “It is a very fair question and I think that if there’s anything that ambassador Crocker and I will take back to Iraq candidly after this morning’s session and this afternoon’s is, in fact, to ask those kind of questions more directly.”
David Petraeus and Ryan Crocker had nothing to say but there is significant progress but fragile, reversible and there is no light in the tunnel. The conclusion must be that we are confronted with the reality: the war in Iraq is a black hole.
That is one point of the triangle.

Compared with the experts on the ground, the commanding general and the US ambassador in Iraq, the vision of the senators Lieberman, Graham and McCain is a different one and far more optimistic.
Senator Joe Lieberman scoffed at war skeptics for embracing what he called a see-no-progress, hear-no-progress, speak-no-progress view of the war. "According to some, we should fire you," Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) told the witnesses. "It sounds like... really nothing good has happened in the last year and this is a hopeless endeavor. Well, I beg to differ." "We are no longer staring into the abyss of defeat, success is within reach." said the presumed GOP presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (Ariz.). Here we meet the conclusion: the circumstances are fine and we are settled for another 100 years. They cited various indicators of what they consider success. "Weekly security incidents" are down to 2005 levels – at least until last week, before Maliki’s attack on Basra. Civilian deaths, according to U.S. military figures, have fallen to early 2006 levels. Bombings are down to mid-2006 levels. The number of Iraqi battalions taking the lead in operations is up 20 percent since January 2007. The Sunni opposition to Al Qaeda in Iraq within Anbar province remains strong. Several pieces of legislation important to national political reconciliation have moved forward in the Iraqi parliament. A budget was passed with record amounts of capital expenditures. And, as Crocker noted, Iraq's Council of Representatives approved a redesign of the Iraqi flag. Their message: We must stay the course.
This is the second point of the triangular viewpoint."

Then there is another way to look at the reality. Troops are sitting back, mostly hiding in the tunnel during signs of unrest, with no light backwards and no light ahead. They hired 90,000 Sunni insurgents for 10 dollar a day each to fight al-Qaeda, while there is a ceasefire in the civil war and in stead of negotiating and building a democratic government and political practice Maliki attacks his political opposition with the Iraqi army, but does not succeed to overcome his opponent. This is no progress. It is a mess. Senator Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) remarked that the testimony from Petraeus and Crocker, who each claimed there has been significant though fragile progress in Iraq, "describes one Iraq while we see another." Also McCain could have said that, meaning the opposite. In his opening remarks, senior Senator and chairman Levin noted, that the main purpose of the surge – to provide Iraqi leaders breathing room to hammer out a political settlement – “has not been achieved," and he argued that "our current open-ended commitment is an invitation to continuing [Iraqi] dependency." He blasted the "incompetence and excessively sectarian leadership" of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and noted Iraq was not spending the billions of dollars in surplus it has obtained thanks to rising oil prices, leaving the American taxpayers (who are forced to pay up to $4.00 a gallon for gas) paying for tens of billions of reconstruction within Iraq. He cited a State Department report that noted that "the intransigence of Iraq's Shiite-dominated government [is] the key threat facing the U.S. effort in Iraq, rather than al-Qaida terrorists, Sunni insurgents or Iranian-backed militias." And he said that he was recently informed that of 110 joint U.S.-Iraqi operations of company size or greater in Iraq in the first three months of 2008, Iraqi forces assumed the lead in only 10 of those missions. If the military operations of the Iraqi army are up with 20%, you can do the math that this is too few to mention. Kennedy wondered when Iraqi forces – the recipient of billions of dollars in U.S. assistance – are "ready to fight on their own." And they can not fight with any success “some groups of bandits” scattered over the harbour of Basra. Senator Jim Webb (D-Va.) noted that the "awakening" in Anbar started before the escalation of U.S. troops in Iraq, and he shared his concern that the war was producing serious "strain" for the military.
This vision is the third point of the triangular viewpoint on the war of Iraq.

De Sterilisatie Van De Aarde Gaat Door

We hadden onlangs bezoek van een vroegere buurman. Ja, Brazilië was onze buurman toen Suriname nog een stuk van Nederland was. Nou ja, president Lula kwam eens langs om over bio-energie te spreken en, zoals bekend verondersteld mag worden, is Pointer daar fel tegen. Maar daar trekt Lula zich geen donder van aan en staatsecretaris Van Heemskerk evenmin, noch minister Voorhoeve. Die lui zitten daar lekker te smikkelen met elkaar en onze geliefde vorstin is daar ook bij, maar die mag natuurlijk niets ertegenin brengen. Je mag aannemen dat een echte koningin niet erg gesteld is op gelegenheidspresidenten, maar deze gaf een voorbeeld hoe slecht zo’n president kan zijn en daaraan schrijft Pointer toe dat de majesteit toch lief bleef glimlachen. Ja, Beatrix boppe! Dat blijft. We laten het mooie dat in twee eeuwen is opgebouwd niet onderschoffelen door de waan van de dag, hè?
Er groeien indrukwekkend veel bomen in Brazilië, want ze hebben het grootste deel van het nog resterende regenwoud in dat land. Dat moet opgeruimd worden, vinden onze bewindslieden samen met Lula. Zo ontstaat er ruimte om gewassen te telen, waarvan je ethanol kunt maken en verdomd, dat noemt Lula dan democratisering van de energievoorziening, omdat die nu in handen is van slechts enkele olielanden.
Waarom is ons regeerkransje dan zo enthousiast?
Wel, de Braziliaanse grondstoffen kunnen in Rotterdam tot ethanol verwerkt worden en verder over Europa worden gedistribueerd. Europa heeft beloofd dat er per 2010 zo'n 5,75% ethanol aan de benzine moet worden toegevoegd, dus er is een dikke markt voor dat spul. O ja, mevrouw Voorhoeve is de dame die ook graag vier grote zwaar vervuilende kolencentrales wil laten bouwen.
Denken die mensen wel eens na over het verband van energiewinning met milieuproblemen?
Nee, maar het ontgroenen van de aarde wordt wel groene politiek genoemd, want er is nu ineens veel geld mee te verdienen en de te verbouwen ethanolstekjes zijn ook groen nietwaar? Voor het ene stukje groen, het regenwoud, geef je dus een ander stukje groen terug. Niks aan de hand, zeggen ze, want daar heb je tenminste wat aan en in een regenwoud kun je niet eens met de auto komen, dus dan je kunt er ook niet van genieten.
Ja, qua herseninhoud zijn het dwergen en dan willen ze ook nog daarmee Nederland hooghouden als het centrum van kenniseconomie. Wij zouden bijzonder veel verstand van zaken hebben, als het om het verbouwen en verwerken van biobrandstof gaat. Dat de CO2-uitstoot met biobrandstof gelijk blijft, zullen ze dus best wel weten en dat de afbraak daarvan, door het regenwoud te laten verdwijnen, desastreus en onomkeerbaar vermindert, weten ze dan ook wel. Het is geen onwetendheid, maar vandalisme waardoor deze rampen zich voltrekken.

In zijn toespraak presenteerde Lula ethanol vervolgens als ‘groen’ alternatief voor fossiele brandstoffen. Hij eiste in het debat over het vermeende gebrek aan duurzaamheid „technische en rationele argumenten” en verwierp „ideologische vooroordelen”. Hij vroeg hierbij begrip voor het „perspectief” van Brazilië. Ethanol geeft arme landen de kans ook iets te produceren, zei hij, en „democratiseert de energiebehoefte” die nu in handen is van „een kleine groep olielanden”.

Kijk, dat wij het het niet fijn vinden dat al het regenwoud verdwijnt, noemt Lula natuurlijk een emotioneel argument. Maar hoe noemt hij het feit dat regenwouden de longen van de wereld vormen en dat de onvoorstelbare natuurlijke variatie in regenwouden voorziet in kennis over grondstoffen die we nog nooit elders hebben aangetroffen, maar wel dringend nodig hebben, bijvoorbeeld voor de volksgezondheid in de wereld? Waarom noemt men dit een groen alternatief, terwijl de CO2-uitstoot bij gebruik van ethanol gelijk is aan die van fosssiele brandstoffen? En hoe staat het met de bescherming van bedreigde diersoorten?
Vooral dat laatste is een emotioneel argument, want in Brazilië vliegen ze, voordat en stuk regenwoud gekapt wordt, eerst over het gebied heen, om er alle indianen die er nog wonen uit te moorden, anders is het veel te link om daar bomen om te hakken. Kijk, in feite hebben we daar in Nederland geen last van, merken we het niet eens, omdat het zo ver weg is, dus is het een ideologisch of emotioneel argument, niet rationeel en zeker niet technisch, want echt het is hartstikke makkelijk om die indianen dood te krijgen. Daar hebben ze nu juist in Brazilië grote expertise in. Het wordt er uitgevoerd door de "eigenaren" van het land, personen, grootgrondbezitters genoemd, die per individu stukken land “bezitten” zo groot als onze gehele natie, inclusief overzeese gebiedsdelen en reken daar voor het gemak dan Suriname ook nog maar bij. Kijk, dat noemt de “socialist” Lula dus democratisering. Onze regering zit daarbij te knikken, christenen en voormalige sociaaldemocraten, die onder druk van de EO merendeels ook devote christenen zijn geworden. In de christelijke speekwijze wordt het vernielen van de aarde "goed rentmeesterschap" genoemd.
Het is wel een typisch stukje VOC-mentaliteit.
De huidige coalitie van regenwoudstaten bestaat uit de volgende leden: Bolivia; Central African Republic; Chile; DR Congo; Congo, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic; Fiji; Gabon; Guatemala; Nicaragua; Panama; Papua New Guinea; Solomon Islands en Vanuatu. Zie het grootste land Brazilië staat er niet bij, Indonesië, Maleisië en Colombia trouwens ook niet. De reden wordt duidelijk in het volgende citaat:

Des te cynischer is het om de zetel van deze organisatie uitgerekend te vestigen in New York aan de Columbia University.
Waaruit blijkt het milieuprobleem?
Voor de meeste regeringen is het alleen maar hinderlijk dat talloze burgers er een hoop herrie over maken. Er zijn meer mensen die lid zijn van een orgenisatie op het gebied van dieren- en natuurbescherming dan van een politieke partij, ja van alle politieke partijen samen. Dat is lastig bij verkiezingen, maar nu hebben ze een handige oplossing. Als je van het milieu niets meer overlaat, weg ermee, de aarde volledig steriliseert, zodat het milieu niet meer bestaat, dan kan het er ook niet slecht mee gaan en dus heeft er dan niemand meer wat te klagen. Per slot heb je ook geen actiegroepen om de dinosaurus te beschermen, omdat er niet eentje meer van over is. Zo gaat dat, dus dat is de oplossing en ze hebben haast, want al dat geklaag verstoort de economische groei.
Verniel en heers is de nieuwe orde.

Wie Zijn Schuld Het Is?

Onze economie begint een zorgenkindje te worden en dat hebben we niet verdiend. We hadden de zaakjes goed op orde, hard gewerkt, lonen gematigd, flink ondernemerschap ontwikkeld, geen begrotingstekorten gehad, de nationale schuld teruggebracht en de export overtreft de import. En tóch…
Sommige dingetjes zijn bij ons niet veel anders dan in de VS waar de hypotheekcrisis voor grote problemen zorgt. Wij zitten met de woekerpolissen, maar dat is een veel kleiner probleem en toch is het idee van Larry Summers, een van ’s werelds bekendste economen, dat de huizenmarkt dit jaar wel eens flink onderuit zou kunnen gaan. Tja, dat is wel vaker voorgekomen, bijvoorbeeld eind van de jaren ’70, toen de prijzen van het onroerend goed plotseling haast halveerden. Maar Summers was minister van Financiën in de VS en hoofdeconoom van de Wereldbank, dus kan hij onze situatie dan wel goed inschatten? Het is waar, dat onze huizen te hoog in de prijs liggen, afgaande op wat het kost om een nieuw huis te bouwen, maar dat probleem zou met een gelijdelijke prijsval van hooguit -20% te tackelen zijn en dat is een strop, maar er vloeit niet meteen bloed uit. Op de meeste huizen zit een hypotheek en die gaat doorgaans niet verder dan 80% van de marktwaarde. Valt die marktwaarde met maximum van 20% en niet meer, dan is dat beperkt, omdat er nog steeds woningnood is en er dus een sterke vraag bestaat, terwijl een prijsval doorgaans ook een tijdelijk verschijnsel is en dan is de hypotheek nog steeds 100% gedekt. Volgens het IMF zijn de huizenprijzen in ons land 30% te hoog, maar dat klopt niet, want ze hebben geen rekening gehouden met ons exotische voordeel van de hypotheekrenteaftrek. Geen reden tot paniek.
Toch zegt Summers, dat de kans op een economische neergang in Europa een stuk groter is dan velen aannemen. Ja, we zijn niet alleen in Europa, hè? In Frankrijk, Italië en Griekenland zijn de zaken minder rooskleurig dan bij ons.
Je weet het niet, hè?
Dat is een flink deel van de rekening, onzekerheid en gebrek aan vertrouwen. Wij vertrouwen er teveel op, dat de banken die de touwtjes in handen houden, uit eigenbelang wel zorgen dat het goed zit en goed blijft. Daar gaan ook de ministers van Financiën en de centrale bankiers vanuit, want ze komen met een stuk op de proppen, waarin dat, nauwelijks verbloemd tussen de regels, te lezen is. Er moet meer openheid, meer transparantie in het geldwezen komen en vooral door te laten zien welke risico’s zij – dus ook wij – met bepaalde investeringen lopen. Het is half werk, maar het kan een beetje helpen.
Het zou beter zijn om de kredietwaardigheid wettelijk te garanderen, door een limiet te stellen aan de financiering van het onderpand. Dat je bijvoorbeeld niet meer dan 80% van de courante marktwaarde aan hypotheek kunt krijgen. Je moet voor andere kredietvormen vergelijkbare normen te ontwikkelen. Als daarover dan de nodige openheid gegeven wordt, keert het vertrouwen vanzelf terug en kunnen we weer groeien. Maar ja, erg doortastend is men nooit in het geldwezen.
Voor de wat langere termijn stellen de G7 voor, de regels, waaraan banken zich moeten houden, aan te scherpen. Aanscherpen van de regels klinkt iets anders dan uitbreiden, want daar kom je, in deze tijd van deregulering, politiek niet verder mee. Nout Welling, de president van de Nederlandse Bank, zei dat hij er vóór deze zomer nog voor zorgt, dat die regels er komen en hij kan dat zeggen, want hij is voorzitter van de club die het klusje moet uitvoeren, om regels voor te schrijven, waaraan banken zich international moeten houden. Ha, een zuinige, strenge Hollander aan het roer. Dat geeft weer wat hoop.
Hoewel het toezicht dus tekortgeschoten is, kun je er moeilijk onderuit, dat niet de toezichthouders, maar de werkelijke actoren verantwoordelijk zijn. Maar pas als je ziet wat die doen, kun je maatregelen nemen.
In de logische volgende stap zien de grote zeven graag, dat het Internationale Monetair Fonds wat meer onderzoek doet naar effecten, zoals van de financiële kredietcrisis, op de economie, want kijk, financiën en economie zijn nog wel steeds heel verschillende dingen, wat niet voor iedereen volkomen duidelijk is. Afijn, daar gaat het IMF dit weekend over nadenken en die jongens en meisjes hebben ervoor doorgeleerd, dus dan komt het wel in orde.
Denk nu niet, dat wij het moeilijk hebben. De voedselprijzen zijn nogal drastisch gestegen en dat is vooral voor arme landen een veel groter probleem, zegt Jaques Diouf, een hoge piet bij de FAO (voedsel- en landbouworganisatie van de VN). Hij is bang dat de reeds begonnen voedselrellen zich uitbreiden en daar gaat de FAO ook een crisisbijeenkomst over houden. Het zou leuker zijn, als hij meer bang was dat meer mensen zo’n honger krijgen, dan dat ze rotzooi gaan trappen. In de VS belanden enkele miljoenen mensen onder de brug en elders begint ordinaire hongersnood de kop op te steken. Krijgen wij dat ook over ons heen? Het is toch om bang van te worden.
Onheilstijdingen, maar die voedselprijzen, dat is uiteraard het echte probleem en dat is moeilijk te vatten. Gaan de voedselprijzen omhoog, als de prijs van huizen gaat zakken?
Ja, dat is zo en dat komt hierdoor: Een huis, nadat het in een faillissement voor een lagere prijs verkocht is, is nog steeds een huis en kan als zodanig gebruikt worden en dus heeft het duurzame waarde. Voedsel, dat opgegeten wordt door een werkloze, is weg en heeft geen economisch rendement. Het rendement van voedsel is arbeidskracht en als die benut wordt, is dat goed voor de economie. Als de prijs van een goed stijgt, is dat doorgaans doordat de vraag groter is dan het aanbod en dat noemen we schaarste. Dat aanbod kan groter worden door meer arbeid en dus meer productie. Daar zijn dan investeringen voor nodig en dus krediet, dat verleend wordt op grond van de waarde van de zaak, het rendement. Maar als de productie toeneemt, gaat de prijs weer zakken en wordt het rendement kleiner en met minder rendement behoort de kredietruimte te slinken. Alles in de economie is dus een kwestie van zorgvuldig balanceren en het eerste wat daarvoor nodig is, lijkt me transparantie, openheid van zaken, een reëel beeld van de werkelijkheid. Dat vinden speculanten, met name de banken, juist helemaal niet leuk en dat houden ze zoveel mogelijk tegen. Met speculatie wordt namelijk het meeste geld verdiend, zonder dat daartegenover enige prestatie staat. Werknemers die wél presteren, worden daardoor werkloos. Dan klapt het kaartenhuis van de economie in elkaar.
Het parasitaire gedoe van speculanten moet je dus uitroeien.

Moral Leadership

Wie herinnert zich niet de gevangenis van Abu Ghraib? Van die martelingen door vrolijke Amerikaanse militairen, nietwaar? Toen er in 2003 foto’s van gepubliceerd werden, sprak iedereen er schande van, ook David Rumsfeld die als minister van defensie verantwoordelijk was. Er werd om zijn ontslag gevraagd. Men ging ervan uit dat er in opdracht gemarteld werd. Het begon met een anoniem briefje dat sergeant Joseph Darby bij zijn commandant onder de deur schoof. Generaal Antonio Taguba werd met een onderzoek belas en hij bracht op 4 april 2004 rapport uit over de “schandelijke daden en zware inbreuken op internationale rechtsorde.” Het rapport gaf ook aan dat 60% van de gevangenen volkomen onschadelijk was voor de samenleving. Enfin, men kent het verhaal.
Intussen werden er 17 soldaten en officieren opgepakt, inclusief brigadegeneraal Janis Karpinski, en ontslagen uit de dienst. De aanklachten omvatten: plichtsverzuim, mishandeling, zware belediging en aanranding.

On April 8, 2005 Karpinski was formally relieved of command of the 800th Military Police Brigade, and on May 5, 2005, President Bush approved Karpinski's demotion to colonel from the rank of brigadier general. Her demotion was not officially related to the abuse at Abu Ghraib prison.
In October 2005 she published an account of her experiences, One Woman's Army, in which she claims that the abuses were perpetrated by contract employees trained in Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay and sent under orders from Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, and that her demotion was political retribution.

Maar het is nog veel gekker. In de kelder van het Witte Huis zaten vicepresident Cheney, nationaal veiligheidsadviseur Condoleezza Rice, defensieminister Donald Rumsfeld, minister Colin Powel van buitenlandse zaken, CIA-directeur George Tenet en minister van justitie John Ashcroft gewoon ronduit over martelen te babbelen en alleen Ashcroft had bezwaren.

He agreed with the general policy decision to allow aggressive tactics and had repeatedly advised that they were legal. But he argued that senior White House advisers should not be involved in the grim details of interrogations… 'Why are we talking about this in the White House? History will not judge this kindly.'

Zulke marteltechnieken werden later in een controversieel memo van 2 augustus 2002 geautoriseerd door het departement van justitie, dat bij de CIA bekend stond als “Het Gouden Schild” omdat de agenten bang waren dat er wel eens strafvervolging uit kon voorkomen, als het allemaal publiek zou worden, maar ook daarna gingen de meetings en briefings in het Witte Huis nog door, soms om individuele gevallen te bespreken. Deze mensen behoren in Den Haag berecht te worden.

"According to a former CIA official involved in the process, CIA headquarters would receive cables from operatives in the field asking for authorization for specific techniques. Agents, worried about overstepping their boundaries, would await guidance in particularly complicated cases dealing with high-value detainees, two CIA sources said.

Dit zijn dus oorlogsmisdaden, maar afgezien daarvan, wat levert het nu eigenlijk op, is de informatie betrouwbaar of zeggen de gevangenen maar wat uit angst en pijn? Een voorbeeld is Zubaysah waarover Dan Froomkin in de Washington Post schrijft:

There's one serious flaw in the ABC report: It allows the administration's version of Zubaydah's value as an intelligence asset to go unrefuted. ABC calls Zubaydah a "top al Qaeda operative" and reports that "[a]ter he was waterboarded, officials say Zubaydah gave up valuable information that led to the capture of 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammad and fellow 9/11 plotter Ramzi bin al-Shibh."
But as I've written, administration statements about Zubaydah have been almost entirely contradicted by authoritative accounts from author Ron Suskind and New York Times reporter David Johnston.
Zubaydah, it turns out, was a mentally ill minor functionary, nursed back to health by the FBI, who under CIA torture sent investigators chasing after false leads about al-Qaeda plots on American nuclear plants, water systems, shopping malls, banks and supermarkets. The most valuable information Zubaydah gave investigators about Mohammed was his nickname, which, as Dan Eggen and Dafna Linzer reported in The Washington Post, the CIA had already learned seven months earlier.

Daar heb je dus niks aan.

Free Trade But Fair Trade III

Het is jammer, maar nadat Hillary’s campagnestrateeg Mark J. Penn – op zijn prijskaartje stond uiteindelijk 10.800.000 dollar – is weggestuurd, wegens zijn professionele steun aan het handelsverdrag, waar zij als kandidaat Democratisch presidentskandidaat tegen is, moet ze haar echtgenoot ook de laan uitsturen wegens hetzelfde vergrijp.
Hillary is er gloeiend tegen, Bill is er gloeiend voor.

The acknowledgment adds new hurdles to the New York senator's bid to woo Democratic voters in Pennsylvania and elsewhere who believe free trade agreements have eliminated thousands of U.S. jobs. On Sunday, she demoted her chief campaign strategist for his role in promoting the Colombia pact.
Hillary Clinton told union activists Tuesday she would do everything in her power to defeat the Colombia Free Trade Agreement now before Congress.
Her campaign spokesman, Jay Carson, said in response to a query from The Associated Press that the senator's opposition is "clear and firm." He added: "Like other married couples who disagree on issues from time to time, she disagrees with her husband on this issue. President Clinton has been public about his support for Colombia's request for U.S. trade preferences since 2000."

Het gaat er natuurlijk niet om dat Bill haar echtgenoot is, maar om het feit dat hij als voormalige president haar belangrijkste campagnetroef is en nu blijkt hij net zo fout op dezelfde issues als de afgekeurde Penn.
Als iemand in Colombia vakbondsactiviteiten wil organiseren wordt ie doodgeschoten, dus je hebt er heel lage lonen voor arbeiders en die lonen worden niet eens altijd uitbetaald, maar daar mag je niet over klagen. Met zo’n land moet je dus geen vrijhandelsverdrag sluiten en dat zeg k je tegen de vakbonden, anders stemmen ze niet op je. Dat is toch logisch? Het is net zoiets als wanneer wij het invoeren van spullen afkeuren als er kinderarbeid aan te pas – of eigenlijk te onpas – gekomen is. Je bent tegen slavernij maar in het buitenland moet het kunnen?
Bill Clinton verdiende 800.000 dollar voor een toertje Mexico, Colombia en Brazilië, betaald door Gold Service International, om de vrijhandel te promoten, waar Hillary Clinton zo tegen is, nee, ze is er niet tegen, Obama ook niet, maar dan moeten de arbeidsomstandigheden en -rechten in zo’n land vergelijkbaar zijn, ook met vergelijkbare milieumaatregelen. Free moet ook fair zijn.
Jom Hoffa is president van de Teamsters, een grote vakbond. http://www.teamster.org/08news/nr_080409_2.asp Hij slingerde de vrijhandelspraktijk aan bij verschillende bezoeken aan plaatsen in Pennsylvania waar de Democratische voorverkiezingen op 22 april gehouden worden. Hershey Foods Corp. Sluit de deuren in Reading waar pepermunt en ander snoepgoed gemaakt wordt. De productie gaat aan het eind van dit jaar naar het Mexicaanse Monterry en dat kost 650 banen, maar het bedrif heeft ook al eerder vijf fabrieken gesloten en heeft plannen die nog eens 1500 banen kosten. In Pennsylvania heeft de vrijhandel gecombineerd met Bush’s belastingpolitiek voor bedrijven reeds 44,000 banen gekost door NAFTA sinds 1994 en sinds 2001 gingen er 78.000 banen verloren aan China.

“Sen. Barack Obama’s proposal to give tax breaks to companies that stay in America and treat their workers well is one reason he’s the most qualified person to be president of the United States,” Hoffa said.
Obama introduced the “Patriot Employers Act” in August, along with Sens. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, and Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill. “These so-called trade deals are killing American jobs,” Hoffa said. “They aren’t about trade, they’re about helping companies move their factories to countries with cheaper labor.
“The last thing American workers need is a trade deal with Colombia, one of the most anti-union countries in the world,” Hoffa said.
